Winter Storm Watch issued for Arkansas, Oklahoma this Christmas than 6 inches of snow expected
The National Weather Service issued winter storm replica watches Sunday in parts of Arkansas and Oklahoma before a storm that could cause hazardous road conditions and up to 6 inches of snow in the area this Christmas.
The National Weather Service in Norman, Oklahoma, said a winter storm warning is in effect from Monday and Tuesday night for parts of Oklahoma, including El Reno, Oklahoma City and Ponca City.
Forecasters said the snow should start falling in these areas between midnight and 09:00 Tuesday. The snow will be higher during the day before Tuesday gusts decreasing even as the storm moves east.
In Arkansas, a winter storm warning is in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday in parts of the state, including Russellville, Harrison and Mena.
"There are still many uncertainties in the exact path of the storm," said Willie Gilmore, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Little Rock.
He seemed very sure, however, that parts of Arkansas and Oklahoma will likely have a white Christmas.
The National Weather Service in Norman warned that the snow may be accompanied by high winds, which could reduce visibility and possibly "near whiteout conditions" for holiday travelers.
In Arkansas, forecasters said a mix of snow and sleet is expected to develop in the area of Christmas, everything changes with time in the snow during the day.
"Travel conditions will be treacherous ... as roads become covered with ice and snow," the National Weather Service in Little Rock, said on its website.
